Towards Ontological Context Mediation for Semantic Web Database Integration: Translating COIN Ontologies Into OWL

چکیده
The COntext INterchange (COIN) approach to information integration [Goh et al, 1999] [Bressan et al, 2000] [Firat et al, 2002] uses ontological mappings and enables powerful context-sensitive query mediation for semantic integration of knowledge across multiple heterogeneous database sources. Its existing applications include financial analysis for the financial services industry, as well as airfare and car-rental aggregators for the travel industry [Firat, 2003]. COIN’s original development preceded the Semantic Web. In this paper, we address how to combine the best of COIN’s capabilities with those of standardized Semantic Web ontologies and rules, i.e., OWL [W3C, 2004] and RuleML [RuleML, 2003] [Grosof, 2004]. As a substantial first step, we give (in summary form) a translation of COIN’s ontology representation into OWL description logic, thereby enabling COIN to utilize OWL ontologies. We further identify, at a high level, how to use RuleML logic program rules, together with the ontologies, to perform the kinds of reasoning that the overall COIN approach does, including mapping ontologies and mediating queries. Challenges for future work include treatment of equational ontologies, constraint solving, and abduction.

Context Mediation in the Semantic Web: Handling OWL Ontology and Data Disparity Through Context Interchange
The COntext INterchange (COIN) strategy is an approach to solving the problem of interoperability of semantically heterogeneous data sources through context mediation. COIN has used its own notation and syntax for representing ontologies. More recently, the OWL Web Ontology Language is becoming established as the W3C recommended ontology language. We propose the use of the COIN strategy to solv...

The Web-based information systems have been much developed since the Internet is known as a global accessible open network. The Semantic Web vision aims at providing supplementary meaningful information (meta-data) about Web resources in order to facilitate automatic processing by machines and interoperability between different systems. In this paper, we present an approach for the integration ...

متن کاملIntegration Mapping Rules: Transforming Relational Database to Semantic Web Ontology
Semantic integration became an attractive area of research in several disciplines, such as information integration, databases and ontologies. Huge amount of data is still stored in relational databases (RDBs) that can be used to build ontology, and the database cannot be used directly by the semantic web. Therefore, one of the main challenges of the semantic web is mapping relational databases ...
متن کاملKnowledge Integration to Overcome Ontological Heterogeneity: Challenges from Financial Information Systems
The shift towards global networking brings with it many opportunities and challenges. In this paper, we discuss key technologies in achieving global semantic interoperability among heterogeneous information systems, including both traditional and web data sources. In particular, we focus on the importance of this capability and technologies we have designed to overcome ontological heterogeneity...
